NEWS RELEASE June 14, 2023

International conference will look at free speech on the left

Censorship, cancel culture, identity politics and other issues will go under the microscope during the Free Speech and the Left conference June 17 to 24.

The online event will feature authors, academics, journalists and activists from a dozen countries. The conference will consist of pre-recorded presentations, panel discussions and livestream segments.

Co-hosted by Plebity, India & Global Left, Redline, and acTVism Munich, the conference will be broadcast on Plebity’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@plebity).

Participants will include Nadine Strossen, Richard Wolff, Freddie deBoer, Noam Chomsky, Jill Stein, Susan Neiman, Tara Henley and Jacob Mchangama.

“The conference is meant to be the first in a series of conversations with scholars, thinkers and activists on the left that reaffirms the principle of free speech and the free exchange of ideas as a core leftist value,” said Mark White of Plebity.

“A good conference should raise as many questions as it answers,” said Jyotishman Mudiar of India & the Global Left. “We’re asking, does free speech belong to any particular political ideology, what is the left’s relationship to free speech, and does free speech unite or divide people?”

“Limiting speech does not serve the working class or any oppressed group or disadvantaged minority,” said Daphna Whitmore of Redline. “This conference is reclaiming the principle of free speech. A left worthy of the name must make free speech a top priority.”
