Close the Israeli embassy, cut ties with Israel

by Daphna Whitmore

What other western country shoots demonstrators with snipers? Like a scene from Game of Thrones Israel continued its bloody killing spree on the Gaza border while celebrating the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

Men, women and children protesting in Gaza against the siege, their loss of land and nationhood

As Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were opening the embassy the death toll rose to more than 60 Palestinians with an estimated 2000 maimed this week. Meanwhile fascistic religious Jewish mobs in Jerusalem went on a rampage against Palestinians, all the while protected by the Israeli state.

Israel’s siege of Gaza, now in its eleventh year, has turned the 1.8 million people of Gaza into prisoners. When they protest against the siege, their loss of land and nationhood, Israel metes out more violent and sick treatment. The Israeli army fires at will against men, women and children, and then cries that it is the victim. It is a macabre show.

The Palestinian resistance is a remarkable struggle against the odds. The two-state solution, which was predicated on continuing the injustice and legitimising Israel, has failed because a belligerent Israel is not willing to concede anything of substance.

Now is the time for more than words. Jacinda Ardern has condemned the killing, calling it a ‘devastating one-sided loss of life’ and the Israeli Ambassador Itzhak Gerberg has been called to a meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. No doubt there will be more words exchanged. This will carry little weight if there are no consequences. If the words are to mean anything they must be followed by cutting all diplomatic ties, closing the embassy, and stopping all trade with Israel.

Auckland protest against the massacres in Gaza

  1. The slaughter on the border with Gaza has to be seen for what it was. It was an integral part of the celebration of the opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem. Not content with killing a handful every week the High Command of the IDF would have issued a directive to the snipers to increase the kill. They obeyed with alacrity . Media coverage of the other killings suggest that the snipers would have been overjoyed to have a chance to up their slaughter quota.

It is important to understand that the actions of the IDF are not an aberration. They are part of the generative grammar of colonialism. If I come to steal your land, I must demonize you, treat you as a sub human and if you will not leave I must kill you. While at the same time I will deny the fact of conquest and in the case of the Israeli colonists I will say I am coming home to what god promised me.
If we are ever to have a decent world all people of conscience must reject Zionism and impose BDS on Israel now.

    • Yes, it’s crucial to get over the mnessage that the butchery on the Gaza border is not an aberration, that these killings are deliberate state policy and they flow *inevitably* from the nature of the Israeli state. From the Nakba of 1948 to theese kllings on the 70th anniversary is an absolutely straight line, there isn’t even a small zig-zag in it. This is the true face of Zionism and the Zionist state.

      • I forgot to add, that while the embassy celebrations ran concurrently with the slaughter, the liberal Tel Avivians were celebrating the Eurovision contest win.

Gideon Levy remains a tiny minority voice within Israel consistently exposing the nature of the regime. He seems to be filled with more despair every week. In his latest Haaretz column he noted “If 60 stray dogs were shot to death in one day by IDF soldiers, the whole country would raise an outcry. The dog slaughterers would be put on trial, the nation of Israel would have devoted prayers to the victims, a Yizkor service would be said for the dogs slaughtered by Israel.

But on the night of the Palestinians’ slaughter, Zion rejoiced and was jubilant: We have an embassy and a Eurovision. It’s difficult to think of a more atrocious moral eclipse. Neither is it difficult to imagine the reverse scenario: 60 Israelis are killed in one day and the crowds celebrate the embassy in Ramallah and rejoice over a concert in El Bireh to cheer the winning of the Arab “A Star is Born,” while television hosts and interviewees giggle during the live broadcasts. Oh, those Palestinian animals, oh, the monsters.”

  2. Israel’s regime of occupation is inextricably bound up in human rights violations Colonialism aka Zionism is alive and killing yet the UN watches espouses hot wind of condemnation and engages in humbug investigations that amounts to zilch…and they still bow to the so-called boastful host U.S. of exceptionalism A**expletive

  3. Got a not too bad campaign/petition email from Avaaz re Gaza massacres today. Usually Avaaz stuff about Israel is very weak and full of references to Israel’s right to security blah blah blah but this is better. It doesn’t go as far as calling for a single secular state or the Palestinian right of return but it is calling for BDS including in the face of laws that ban that in certain countries.

Israel has become so right-wing, and doesn’t care about hiding it’s brutality, that even liberals can’t ignore it any longer. The bullshit is just too blatant now. Killing unarmed protesters and calling them terrorists just doesn’t wash with anyone. Those that go along with it do it knowing it’s an obvious lie.

Of course Avaaz did include the following in their email which was not so good:

“Many of those who founded Israel wanted it to be a beacon of a better way. But their vision has been betrayed, and Israel has come to be led by a brutally racist and repressive regime — it deserves the world’s condemnation.”

Israel was founded by Zionists whose goal was always the brutal conquest of Palestine. They didn’t bother to keep this secrete then and their actions since the founding of Israel have been nothing if not ‘brutally racist’. Western Liberals have just chosen not to see it for 70 odd years.

Here’s the Avaaz petition for anyone who wants to sign it:
