One of the unions that has managed to preserve conditions in recent years is the Firefighters Union.

This month the union has managed to beat off an arbitrary move by the Fire Service to change long-standing agreed procedures for paying for overtime worked on public holidays.  Firefighters got the public holiday rate plus a day in lieu.  Then, suddenly, the Fire Service stopped this.

The union has succeeded in getting the old agreement reinstated and is investigating how the change came about, and did so without even any notice.

The union has got the Fire Service to agree to backdate payments for the entitlements which fire fighters had taken off them.
