Peter Seeger’s passing severs a connection with mass radical protest in developed countries.
If the guy had died during the ’70s I think there would have been a lot more fuss made.
As it is, Seeger’s political traditions are at a low ebb and will not be revived in their recognisable form.
Despite his long loyalty to a Stalinist form of socialism and his inclusion in the US left Obama infatuation, Peter Seeger’s radical legacy is outstanding.
He stood firm against cold war anti-communist attacks and maintained decades of energetic principled activism. All the while he never lost his sense of humour or let his head swell.
Pete Seeger’s musical legacy is immense. His understated singing enhanced the melodies of the thousands of songs he rendered. His own compositions will be sung as long as there are people to sing. Pete Seeger also revived and developed the banjo to a similar extent as the work of Earl Scruggs or Bela Fleck.
Red salute comrade.
